The functions of traditional and electronic teaching/learning technologies.
This KSA is related to my Professional Inquiry Project. For my project I am making a resource for teachers that will guide them through different technologies. It will show teachers how to use certain websites in the classroom and for their own professional development. In the process of making this resource, I have used a number of different technologies in my classroom. As well as electronic methods of teaching, I have also used a few traditional methods for teaching and student feedback. Listed below are some examples I have used in my PSIII practicum.
Electronic Technologies: I have used websites such as Poll Everywhere, Remind 101, Today's Meet and Edmodo.
Poll Everywhere is a useful site where students can text in an answer using their cell phones. It is an anonymous site that allows students to give input which also gives teachers a sample of what the students know. The poll below was given to discuss the stages of photosynthesis.
Remind 101 is a website which allows me to message students via their cell phones without having to know their personal numbers. This works great for reminding students and parents about upcoming events in the class such as a test.
Today's Meet is a site similar to a blogging site. I have made my own "group" and asked a question then students have to answer the question and respond to other peoples responses. This is a great way to get input from all students and I don't have to worry about collecting papers.
Edmodo is similar to Moodle. I am able to post all my assignments and PowerPoint's on this site, and only the students in my class have access to them. This gives students the opportunity to get assignments when they miss class or following along the PowerPoint notes on their phone/iPad or iPod.
Traditional Methods: plastic plates and markers
I give students plastic plates to use as white boards and markers. Students are able to write their answer on the plate and then show me their answer by lifting their "white board". This is a great strategy that I use to give the entire classes input and/or to get a sample of what they students understand and what they still need to work on. Many students do not want to raise their hand and give an answer, so this method works very well for classroom participation.
