I understand the structure of the Alberta education system.
KSA 2
Understanding the roles, responsibilities and structure of the Alberta Education system is critical to being an effective teacher. Being knowledgeable about the layers of the education system provides teachers with the foundations for the courses they teach and how they teach them. I follow the Program of Studies that the Alberta government provides. The general and specific outcomes guide the courses that I teach and how I assess students in those courses. Please see my current lesson plans, unit plans and assessments. This plan demonstrates my ability to respond to the highest level on the Alberta education system.
It is also very important for the students to know my expectation for them in the course. I do this by telling students the objectives for the specific lesson and unit I am teaching. I always put their objectives into positive, simple sentences that they can understand. These objectives are posted around the classroom and on their assignments. In grade three I post "I can..." statements on the board so students can refer back to them.
The second most important authority for me to respond to is the administration of the school I work for. I know that if I have questions or concerns I can go to one of my superiors and get great advice that will help me better my abilities as an educator. I believe that it is very important to build strong relationships with other teachers and the school community and I have done just that in all of my practicums and teaching experiences.
