Grade/Subject/Topic: Grade 3, Language Arts, Read Aloud and Center Model
Time Allotted: 40 mins
Learning Objectives:
SLO: Experiment with arranging and recording information in a variety of ways
Identify the main idea or topic and supporting detains in simple narrative or expository passages.
Learning Objectives:
Students will... arrange facts from the book they read into categories.
Identify the main topics and add supporting details in fact charts
Materials Needed:
Book, the activity sheets.
My lesson Goal
Work on reading aloud skills. While reading speak clearly, be enthusiastic and correct myself if I make a mistake to model goo reading skills.
Procedure:
Introduction (5 total mins):
Attendance
Read Aloud: “The Emperor’s Penguin”
Tell the students what I will be expecting them to do after the book: Fantastic facts.
Have the students come to the front of the class to sit around my reading chair.
Explain what we will be doing in the class for the rest of the class.
Body (30 total mins):
Introduce the title of the book and ask students what they think they will learn about
Begin to read the book when all the students are sitting quietly around me.
Emphasize aspects of the book that we will be discussing later. Make stops for words such as “trundling” to explain the meaning.
Hand out the fantastic facts sheet
Model a fantastic facts sheet for the book read aloud. Have the students write down the answers on their own sheet.
Have the students get into pairs and read a fact book. Make the student pairs based on reading levels.
Then, have the students work on a facts chart. There are three different fact sheets that the students can complete depending on difficulty.
Students with lower reading levels will work on the Brainstorming sheet
The majority of the students can work on the fantastic facts sheet
Students with advanced reading skills can work on the tic tac tell for facts sheet
Explain that this will be handed in for an assessment.
Sponge: adventure crossword puzzle.
Closure (5 total mins):
Ask some students to share what they learned from their book.
Have the students prepare for the upcoming class: math.
Assessment Strategies
Monitor students as we complete the fantastic facts sheet as a class. Make sure everyone understands what they need to do.
Have the students hand in their individual facts sheet to be assessed for comprehension.
